- The exact payment method name shown at checkout.
- The new name you want customers to see.

Steps
Step 1 — Open Quick Rename Payment Method
From the Payment Methods section, select Quick Rename Payment Method.
Step 2 — Name the rule
Enter a clear rule name so you can identify it later. Example: Rename Credit Card.
Step 3 — Add the payment method
Enter and select the payment method you want to rename. Use the exact payment method name shown in Shopify checkout.
Step 4 — Add a renaming pair
Under Renaming Pairs, click Add Renaming. Enter the current method name and the new name.
Example: Credit card → Debit / Credit Card
You can add more renaming pairs if you want the same rule to rename multiple payment methods.
Step 5 — Add conditions if needed
Add a condition only if the new name should appear in a specific situation. If you do not add a condition, the rule applies to every eligible checkout.
Step 6 — Activate the rule
Make sure Rule Status is set to Activated.
Step 7 — Check the rule preview
Review the Rule Preview to confirm the rename rule is set up correctly, then select Save.
Verify it worked
Open checkout and check:
- The new payment method name appears when the rule applies.
- If conditions were added, the original name still appears when the rule does not apply.
Limitations
Some payment methods cannot be renamed because Shopify controls their display names:
- Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other wallet-style methods.
- Shopify’s native gift card field.
- Some Shopify-restricted payment methods. See Shopify limitations.
Renaming only changes the checkout display name. It does not rename the method in Shopify admin, order exports, or customer emails.
Common rename examples
