General

What is payment customization in Shopify?

Payment customization is Shopify’s mechanism for controlling how payment methods appear at checkout — hiding, renaming, or reordering them based on conditions like country, cart total, product, or customer tag. It runs on Shopify’s Payment Customization Function API; apps like Nex Reorder provide a visual rule editor on top of it, so no code is required.

What is delivery (shipping) customization in Shopify?

Delivery customization controls which shipping rates appear at checkout and how they’re named and ordered — for example hiding paid shipping when free shipping qualifies, or renaming “UPS Ground” to “Standard Delivery (5–7 days)”. It uses Shopify’s Delivery Customization Function API and works on every Shopify plan.

Can I hide payment methods without Shopify Plus?

Yes. Nex Reorder Payment Method works on all Shopify plans — Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus. You don't need Shopify Plus to hide, rename, or reorder payment methods. The app uses native Shopify Functions which are available on all plans.

The only thing restricted to Shopify Plus is hiding credit card fields in the US and Canada. On other plans, you can customize all non-credit-card payment methods (PayPal, Klarna, Afterpay, bank deposit, manual payments, etc.) without any limitations.

Do I need to write code?

No. The app provides a visual interface where you create rules by selecting a payment or shipping method, choosing an action (hide, rename, or reorder), and setting conditions. No code, no theme editing, no developer required.

What happened to Shopify Scripts?

Shopify Scripts were deprecated in August 2025. If you were using Payment Scripts to hide or modify payment methods, you need to migrate to a Shopify Functions-powered app (like Nex Reorder) or use Shopify’s native Checkout Blocks (Plus only). The app is the replacement for Shopify Scripts for payment customization.

How is this different from Shopify’s Checkout Blocks?

Shopify's Checkout Blocks is a free app from Shopify that can hide, rename, and reorder payment methods. However, it has limitations: conditional rules only work on Shopify Plus, setup is more complex, and it's less intuitive. Nex Reorder provides an easier interface with full conditional support on all Shopify plans.

Payment methods

Which payment methods can I hide?

Any payment method that appears at your Shopify checkout, including: Klarna, Afterpay/Clearpay, PayPal, Stripe, bank deposit, money order, credit card (Plus only in US/Canada), manual payment methods, and any third-party payment gateway. You can also hide express checkout buttons (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, PayPal Express).

Can I hide Klarna for specific products?

Yes. Create a hide rule for Klarna with a product tag condition (e.g., "no-klarna" or "preorder"). When any product with that tag is in the cart, Klarna won’t appear at checkout. Commonly used for pre-order items because Klarna’s 28-day authorization window is too short for longer fulfillment times.

Can I show different payment methods for different customer groups?

Yes. Use customer tag conditions to create different payment setups for different groups. For example: show only bank transfer for customers tagged "wholesale" or "B2B," hide BNPL options for customers tagged "high-risk," or show special payment terms for VIP customers.

Can I hide a payment method based on cart total?

Yes. Set a cart total or subtotal condition on your hide rule. Common use cases: hide credit cards for orders above $5,000 to reduce fraud risk, hide BNPL for orders below $20, or hide bank transfer for small orders.

Can I rename a payment method to something more descriptive?

Yes. Create a rename rule and enter the new name. For example, rename "Credit Card" to "Debit Card / Credit Card" since the field accepts both card types. You can apply rename rules conditionally (e.g., by customer tag for B2B) or unconditionally.

Note: Shopify does not allow renaming payment methods that have logos (like Klarna, PayPal, or Shop Pay). Rename works on text-based payment methods.

Can I make a specific payment method appear first?

Yes. Create a reorder rule to move any payment method to position 1. You can set this conditionally — move iDEAL to position 1 for Netherlands customers, but keep credit card first for everyone else. Commonly used to prioritize local payment methods by country.

Shipping methods

Can I hide shipping methods on Shopify Basic?

Yes. Shipping method customization works on all Shopify plans. You can hide, rename, and reorder shipping rates on Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus.

Can I hide paid shipping when free shipping is available?

Yes. Create a hide rule for your paid shipping rate with a cart total condition. For example: when cart total is greater than $75, hide "Standard Shipping ($7.99)." Only the free shipping option will appear.

Can I hide local delivery for out-of-area customers?

Yes. Use zip code or country conditions to control when local delivery appears. Show local delivery only for customers in your delivery zone.

Technical

How many rules can I create?

There's no limit in the app. However, Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active payment customization functions and 25 active delivery customization functions per store across all apps. Most stores use 3–10 rules total.

Does this affect Shopify POS?

Currently, Shopify's Payment Customization Functions don't run in POS. Your customization rules apply to online checkout and draft order checkouts only.

Does this work with Shopify Markets?

Yes. The app works alongside Shopify Markets. If you've set up multiple markets with different currencies, your payment customization rules will apply at checkout regardless of which market the customer is in. Use country conditions to create market-specific rules.

Is there any impact on checkout speed?

No. The app uses native Shopify Functions, which run inside Shopify’s infrastructure. There are no external API calls, no third-party servers, and no additional scripts loaded. Checkout speed is unaffected.

Does it work with draft orders?

Yes. Payment customizations apply to both regular checkout and draft order checkouts. However, the customizations won't display in the Shopify admin while you're creating the draft order — they apply when the customer opens the checkout link.
