Payment customization is Shopify’s way of controlling how payment methods appear at checkout — hiding, renaming, or reordering them based on conditions like country, cart total, product, or customer tag. It runs on Shopify’s Payment Customization Function API, and apps like Nex Reorder give you a visual editor for it, so no code is needed.
Can you change the order of payment methods on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify itself doesn’t offer a built-in setting, but with a payment customization app you can reorder payment methods so your preferred option appears first — for example, showing iDEAL first for Dutch customers or moving a low-fee gateway above PayPal. The first method in the list gets the most selections.
How do I hide a payment method on Shopify checkout?
Install a payment customization app, create a hide rule, select the method (Klarna, PayPal, Cash on Delivery, etc.), and optionally add conditions like country, cart total, or product tag. The method disappears from checkout instantly — no theme editing required and it works on all Shopify plans.
What replaced Shopify Scripts for payment customization?
Shopify Scripts were deprecated in August 2025. Their replacement is Shopify Functions — the native API that payment and delivery customization apps are built on. If you used Payment Scripts to hide or reorder methods, a Functions-based app like Nex Reorder is the direct migration path.
